Bola del Mundo 2258m (third part) - year 1996

It´s possible to come down “Hell´s Gorge”, as the Spanish Geographical Institute calls it. The rest of us know it as “La Barranca Gully”. In the attached photo you can see how it was on 12th January, 2003. Anyway, I have to say that I´ve only done this descent on two occasions, both of them in 1996. That year it snowed a lot (really) in the Sierra de Guadarrama and for that reason it was possible to do the descent all the way to the vicinity of “La Barranca” hotel. Anyone who says that the Sierra de Guadarrama has had more snow at any time since 1993 is simply wrong. 1996 was the year of the big dump and I think it´s inevitable I´ll write about this again.

Existe una posibilidad de descenso por el valle que el Instituto Geográfico Nacional llama "Garganta del Infierno". Otros lo hemos conocido siempre como "Tubo de la Barranca". En la foto adjunta puede verse el aspecto que tenía el inicio del dicho tubo el día 12 de enero de 2003. En cualquier caso hay que decir que dicho descenso solo lo he hecho dos veces en vida, ambas en el año 1996. Aquel año nevó mucho (de verdad) en la Sierra de Guadarrama y por ello pudo hacerse el descenso hasta las inmediaciones del hotel "La Barranca". Cualquiera que diga que la Sierra de Guadarrama entre 1993 y el día de hoy ha estado en algún momento más nevada que en 1996 sencillamente se equivoca. 1996 fue el año del paquete y creo que va a ser inevitable que hable de esto algún otro día.
